It has not been an easy ride for the russian princess, and defending champion Maria Sharapova in Stuttgart. It took Maria three sets, 6-3,2-6.7-5, to defeat Angelique Kerber in front of a supportive crowd for the german player. It was Maria third consecutive third set match in the tournament.
In the first set, Maria gets an early break being agressive and dictating the tempo of the match. Angelique plays well but double faults the game at 3-5 and Maria closes the first set out.
In the second set, Maria was not moving well and Angelique kept the pressure with powerful ground strokes and great defensive skill. She wins the second set 6-2.
The momentum seemed to have changed in favor of the talented german player who gets an early break on the third set. Maria starts the set playing a poor game, looking somehow lethargic and double faulting a few times., But, Sharapova, who has a strong thirdd set record in matches, gets the break back to serve at 2-2. She starts displaying a very positive body language, moving her feet and her arms around in between points, sending an important message to her opponent that she was there to fight for a place in the finals. For the first time in the match, Kerber looked a little tired and flat, and Maria gets ahead in the scoreboard, holding for a 3-2 lead.
The third set continued being an intense battle by both players, but Sharapova gets a break and serves for the match at 5-3. However, Kerber plays some unbelievable points, and denies Maria the match, at least for a few more game. Kerber serves at 4-5 and holds and forces Maria to serve at 5-5, which she does, winning the game easily. At 5-6, the pressure is back at Angelique to stay in the match, and she plays a really poor game, showing some tension, giving away the game at love ,and the match to Maria Sharapova.
It was a great semi final match and another amazing performance by Sharapova who will try to defend her title against the winner of Li Na and Mattek- Sands.
